Homework Policy

The purpose
  • The purpose of Homework is to develop an effective partnership between school and parents in pursuing the aims of the school ‘Success for All’.
  • To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding particularly in numeracy, literacy and science.
  • To extend school learning through additional reading.
  • To encourage year 5 and year 6 pupils to develop confidence to study on their own as a preparation for secondary education.
  • To set regular homework for year 6 pupils.
  • To provide/loan resources as appropriate to support homework

Homework
Homework will normally focus on reading; spelling and acquiring skills used in mathematics e.g. number bonds and multiplication tables. In addition children may be asked to find information, carry out problem solving tasks and prepare oral and written presentations on specific topics.
  • Year R Mostly focused on reading with children at home with some letter recognition, key words and counting or ordering objects.
  • Year 1-2 Still a focus on reading and writing and spelling of key words but also basic number skills
  • Year 3-4 Most of the homework will focus on reading, spelling and multiplication tables together with some information gathering and problem solving
  • Year 5-6 Again the focus will mainly be on reading, spelling, multiplication tables, scientific vocabulary together with information gathering for a project, revision and mathematical problem solving. Occasionally children will be asked to prepare presentations and look at non core subjects.

The homework will be set by the class teacher and set on Fridays, to be returned by Wednesday. The time expected to be spent on homework will depend on the age of the child but as a rough guide 15 minutes for Year R to 30 minutes for Years 1-4 and 1 hour for Years 5-6. 5-10 minutes of Reading/Spelling will be set on a daily basis.

Partnership with parents
In order to receive feedback and to act as a 3-way communication between teacher-home-pupil, each child is provided with a Home/School Reading record in which all parties are invited to comment regularly. This record follows the child throughout school.
